What a Pomeranian really costs

Pomeranians are cheap to feed but not cheap to keep looking like a Pom: the AKC suggests a full professional groom every four to six weeks if you are not doing it yourself. The biggest bill risk is the knees, since nearly three in ten Poms screened by OFA have abnormal patellas.

Health costs to plan for

Insurify's May 2026 quotes for a Pomeranian ran $26–$74 a month across five insurers, around the $56 national dog average despite the tiny size, reflecting the breed's knee and trachea risks.

ConditionHow it affects PomeraniansTypical treatmentCost
Patellar luxationOFA lists 29.1% of 3,567 screened Pomeranians as abnormal, the highest rate of any breed, and VetCompass found 6.5% of UK Poms diagnosed in primary care. SourceSurgical correction by a board-certified surgeon, per knee$1,500–$3,000
Tracheal collapsePomeranians are one of the breeds most at risk; most are managed with cough suppressants and weight control, and stenting is reserved for severe cases. SourceTracheal stent at a teaching hospital, including CT and anesthesia (severe cases only)$8,000–$9,000
Legg-Calve-Perthes diseaseEmbrace lists the Pomeranian among breeds predisposed to this hip-joint collapse, which usually appears before age one. SourceFemoral head ostectomy (FHO), per hip$1,200–$3,000
Dental diseasePetMD's veterinary dentist advises small dogs need a cleaning every year or more often; tiny Pom jaws crowd teeth and trap plaque. SourceProfessional cleaning under anesthesia ($350–$500 routine), rising to $1,500+ with extractions$350–$1,500

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $531 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Pomeranian

  • Grooming is the steady expense: a bath, brush-out and tidy every 4–6 weeks, plus a slicker brush and pin brush for weekly home work.
  • Ask to see both parents' OFA patella results; with 29.1% of screened Poms abnormal, a $1,500–$3,000-per-knee surgery is a realistic risk.
  • A harness instead of a collar is a cheap precaution for a breed prone to tracheal collapse.
  • Avoid 'teacup' Pom marketing; undersized dogs are a red flag and do not set a fair price range.
  • Weekly brushing to the skin with a pin brush and slicker, as the AKC recommends, keeps mats (and dematting fees) away.

Good Dog's buyer's guide range is $2,000–$3,500 (median about $2,850). Breeders should show OFA patella results; Poms rank first of all breeds for abnormal patella screenings. No Pomeranian-specific rescue fee schedule could be confirmed, so the adoption range is based on general shelter fees (Best Friends: $100–$150) and typical toy-breed rescue fees.
