What a Mastiff really costs

The Mastiff is the heaviest dog in this guide, and most of its costs scale with weight: Mastiff Rescue estimates 40-80 pounds of food a month, and heartworm pills sometimes have to be doubled. Its exercise needs are low, but a 6-10 year lifespan plus bloat and joint risks make it one of the most expensive breeds to insure.

Health costs to plan for

Insurify's Fletch quote data made the Mastiff the most expensive breed to insure at $2,546 a year, versus a $700 national average, and The Zebra also ranks it first.

ConditionHow it affects MastiffsTypical treatmentCost
Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat)AKC lists bloat among Mastiff risks; a JAVMA cohort found giant breeds had 26 GDV cases per 1,000 dog-years, and about 52% of giant-breed cases were linked to raised food bowls. SourceEmergency GDV surgery with gastropexy (Lemonade average cost range for English Mastiffs)$2,500–$7,500
Hip dysplasia20.3% of 14,037 Mastiff hip evaluations at OFA were graded dysplastic. SourceTotal hip replacement, per hip (giant implants and anesthesia push toward the top of the range)$3,500–$15,000
Cranial cruciate ligament tearLemonade lists torn knee ligaments among common English Mastiff claims; giant dogs need larger TPLO plates and more screws. SourceTPLO surgery (University of Missouri quoted $4,500-$5,000 for giant breeds in 2021; Lemonade gives up to $10,000 in 2026)$4,500–$10,000
Elbow dysplasia15.5% of 8,716 Mastiff elbow evaluations at OFA were abnormal. SourceElbow dysplasia workup and surgery or medical management (Lemonade average cost range)$1,200–$3,500

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $2,039 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Mastiff

  • Mastiff Rescue notes a Mastiff can eat 40-80 pounds of premium food a month and may need two heartworm tablets per dose, so prevention costs about double what a Labrador owner pays.
  • Everything is sized up: an extra-extra-large crate, an orthopedic bed that holds 200 lb, and a vehicle or ramp to load a dog you can't lift.
  • Anesthesia, pain medication and antibiotics are dosed by weight, so a routine dental cleaning or spay costs more than for any large breed.
  • Budget for towels and cleaning: AKC notes Mastiffs drool heavily and need their facial wrinkles cleaned to prevent skin infections.
  • Keep puppies off stairs and long walks while they grow, as AKC advises, to protect joints that would be expensive to repair.

The Mastiff Club of America says puppies usually run $1,500 and up depending on pedigree, show potential and location, and warns a higher price is not proof of a healthier dog. The top of the range is an estimate. No rescue fee schedule was found; the adoption range assumes typical breed-rescue fees.
