What a Great Dane really costs
A Great Dane is cheap to groom but expensive in everything sized to its body: food volume, every drug and anesthetic dose, and the bone plates used in orthopedic surgery all scale with a 110-175 lb frame. With a 7-10 year lifespan and bloat as the breed's top killer, a preventive gastropexy and insurance are the main financial decisions.

Health costs to plan for
Bloat, bone cancer and heart disease drive Lemonade's Great Dane rate from $60-$65 a month at age 1 to $115-$120 by age 6, and The Zebra lists it among the five priciest breeds to insure.
| Condition | How it affects Great Danes | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) | AKC calls bloat the number-one killer of Great Danes; in a JAVMA cohort of 11 large and giant breeds, GDV ran at 26 cases per 1,000 dog-years in the giant breeds. Source | Emergency GDV surgery with gastropexy (Lemonade average cost range for Great Danes); a preventive gastropexy done with spay/neuter costs much less | $2,500–$7,500 |
| Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) | Lemonade names the Great Dane among breeds with the highest osteosarcoma prevalence; amputation plus chemotherapy brings average survival to just under one year. Source | Limb amputation followed by chemotherapy; Trupanion's average sarcoma chemotherapy claim was $5,351 and full courses can reach $10,000-$30,000 | $5,000–$30,000 |
| Cranial cruciate ligament tear | A common injury in large and giant breeds; giant dogs need bigger TPLO plates, and University of Missouri prices giant-breed TPLO about $500 above other sizes. Source | TPLO surgery (University of Missouri quoted $4,500-$5,000 for giant breeds in 2021; Lemonade gives $2,000-$10,000 in 2026) | $4,500–$10,000 |
| Dilated cardiomyopathy | AKC lists cardiac disease among Dane health issues, and DCM is one of Lemonade's top Great Dane claims. Source | Echocardiogram plus ongoing heart medication (Lemonade average cost range for Great Danes) | $600–$2,500 |
The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $2,039 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.
What drives the cost of a Great Dane
- Ask your vet to add a preventive gastropexy to the spay or neuter surgery; AKC notes many Dane breeders and owners choose it because it heads off the most dangerous part of GDV, which otherwise means a $2,500-$7,500 emergency.
- A giant-breed crate, an orthopedic bed and a vehicle that can carry a 30-inch-tall dog are first-year costs most breeds never need.
- Feed a large-breed puppy formula and control growth; AKC advises no jogging until age 2 to protect growing joints, which helps you avoid orthopedic bills later.
- Heartworm, flea and tick products are sold in weight bands, and a 140-175 lb male is in the most expensive band.
- Plan for senior-dog costs from about age 6, since the breed's lifespan is only 7-10 years.
