What a French Bulldog really costs
A French Bulldog costs a lot up front because nearly every litter is delivered by C-section, and it keeps costing because the breed's flat face and compact spine send owners to surgeons. Airway surgery runs $3,000-$5,000 and a specialty IVDD repair can pass $10,000, so insurance bought in puppyhood is close to essential.

Health costs to plan for
MoneyGeek's 2026 data puts a middle-aged Frenchie at $90 a month versus $61 for a Labrador, rising to $243 a month at senior age, driven by airway, spine and skin claims.
| Condition | How it affects French Bulldogs | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) | Embrace rates IVDD as a high risk for Frenchies, and Trupanion's adult French Bulldog IVDD claims averaged $800-$3,700 (that includes cases managed without surgery). Source | MRI, spinal decompression surgery and 3-4 days of hospitalization at a specialty neurology practice, all-in | $10,000–$15,000 |
| Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) | A 2021 RVC VetCompass study of 2,781 UK French Bulldogs found them more than 42 times as likely as other dogs to have narrowed nostrils, with BOAS among their highest-risk disorders. Source | Combined airway surgery: nostril widening, soft palate trim and laryngeal saccule removal | $3,000–$5,000 |
| Skin allergies (atopic dermatitis) and ear infections | AKC notes skin allergies occur in the breed; Trupanion's French Bulldog puppy allergy claims averaged $200-$400, and many cases need lifelong management. Source | One year of Cytopoint injections ($50-$150 each, every 1-2 months) for a 20-lb dog | $300–$1,800 |
| Cherry eye (prolapsed third-eyelid gland) | The RVC VetCompass study lists cherry eye among conditions French Bulldogs are predisposed to; it usually appears between 4 months and 2 years. Source | Surgical replacement of the gland, one eye | $1,200–$1,600 |
The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $902 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.
What drives the cost of a French Bulldog
- Breeding is expensive: a 2017 VetCompass study found French Bulldogs 15.9 times as likely as crossbreds to have a difficult birth, and a planned C-section costs $700-$2,000; that cost is baked into puppy prices.
- Budget for ramps or steps and a harness instead of a collar; Frenchies are prone to back injuries, and IVDD claims for the breed averaged $800-$3,700 at Trupanion even before specialty surgery.
- Air conditioning is a real running cost: AKC warns Frenchies tolerate heat poorly, and heatstroke visits in a brachycephalic dog are emergency-room priced.
- Ask the breeder for OFA hip, patella, cardiac and eye results (the FBDCA's recommended panel); skipping health testing saves the breeder money, not you.
- Pick an insurer that covers hereditary and congenital conditions and enroll before any airway or skin signs appear, or BOAS and allergies may be excluded as pre-existing.
